Deadlands - The Flood 4
The CS took the posse to Lost Angels aboard one of their vessels, and Garrett was patched up by a doc en route. Upon arrival in the Free and Holy City, they set about finding more out about the man they had come here to find : Gregor Petrov of Felicity Peak.
The man owned a claim out in the Great Maze to the southwest of the city, so Cal went to hire a boat while Garrett and Holly went to stable the horses. The knifeman caught an urchin girl attempting to pick his pocket and so kicked her away. The voodooist took pity on her and offered her some money, but quickly got annoyed and shooed her away as well. It was only after the girl had disappeared that Holly thought to wonder why mentioning the name Gregor Petrov had sent her scarpering...
Unwilling to wander past the Guardian Angels evangelising on the border between the docks and the city proper, Garrett had to settle for selling the horses to a butcher, but at least he was paid in solid ghost rock, not the red-printed church scrip.
Steam launch rented for the day, the posse set off for Felicity Peak, making it through the twisted canyons of the Maze without incident. There was a lift that could take them up to the top of the island was guarded, and the gunslingers didn't seem to buy the 'being expected by Petrov' story. Cal took a risk and dropped the name of Graves, and they were quickly taken to the top. The larger of the two was more taken by Holly's womanly charms.
A scientist called Timothy was operating the winch, and a dozen or so other gunslingers were ruling a small town from their saloon - the villagers were starved and sporting bruises, and expected to tend to the cliffside minefaces for most of the day. Casual chatter revealed that a man named el jefe ran the gang, under Petrov's auspices. The posse explained that Graves had been captured, and persuaded their two hosts - Moe Pedro and Big John - that they should gather their hoarded stash and leave the island. The deal was just about settled when a Commotion began outside.
El jefe was storming through the town, shouting and shooting miners that he'd caught slacking. The posses sprang into action, sowing enough confusion among the gang members that they turned on each other, and their black-clad leader was forced to flee on a carriage.
Holly and Big John stayed to tend to the peasants while Garrett and Cal followed Moe to dig up the loot he'd been taking from his boss. They killed him and kept the money, as it was clear he was planning on betraying them anyway.
The miners were Russian serfs, imported by Petrov to work and die, with new ones brought in every time they ran low. They were deathly afraid of their noble lord, who took children to his home to never be seen again. Yet under the leadership of the posse, they were willing to storm the castle that sat atop Felicity Peak itself, the monstrous silhouette to which el jefe had fled.
